As a parent new to special services, I was unfamiliar with the intricacies of accommodations and legal requirements. After a doctor recommended that my child qualify for a 504 Plan and provided the necessary documentation, I expected that the school would collaborate with me to ensure my child’s needs were met. However, my initial meetings with the school were unproductive and contentious, leading me to realize that I needed expert assistance.
Monica stepped in and truly made a difference. She carefully listened to my child’s needs, advised on reasonable accommodations, and revised the accommodations to meet both the doctor’s intent but resonated with the school staff. Even the school principal praised Monica saying she was a master of words when she quickly came up with a suggestion for an accommodation.
At the 504 meeting, she effectively led the discussion, advocating for my child with clear explanations of the requests and their significance. She particularly emphasized how denying a specific request would exacerbate my daughter condition and further negatively impact her academically, which led the school to approve it without hesitation. Monica’s articulate and strategic approach won the committee’s approval for all of our requested accommodations.
Going into the meeting, we expecting to face some resistance. To our relief, the school accepted every single one without any pushback.
